I got this cage from Petsmart and it does look really nice and it is easy to set up BUT it’s very cheap. Apparently they haven’t taken into consideration that rat’s like to chew. The bottom is made out of very cheap plastic. The stairs are actually better quality or maybe just thicker plastic than the bottom. After only about a month in a half of having the cage I woke up to my roommate screaming OMG YOUR RAT IS OUT. Go with a better quality cage or wake up and find your rat having a little mini vacation of her own.

This cage is excellent!! Plenty spacious for two normal or one dumbo size rat! (I wouldn’t stick more than that in) I only put two of the three ramps in to give more space (one to the bottom, one to the top, they have to climb the middle), but even with all three ramps there is ample room! My favorite thing is how easy it is to clean, rat & hand access and to re-arrange to keep them interested! I would recommend this cage to everyone looking for a rat cage! Excellent quality, and I have bought two of them now for my 4 rats!

This cage is not an ideal cage for rats because it is not large enough. Rats need as much space as you can possibly give them, as they are smart and curious creatures who enjoy playing with toys and each other.

I bought this cage for one of my female rats when I was introducing her to my other rats, and for this I think the cage is allright, but it is DEFINITELY too small for more than one rat. My rat Julia barely had any room with her wheel, igloo, and toys.

This is an easy cage to clean, so it gets points for that, but I would NOT use it as your rat’s main habitat.

I bought this cage for my 2 rats. The bar spacing and size of it is perfect for two females with plenty of room for an igloo, hammock, and litter box. I took out one of the ramps & the HUGE wheel because they were unnecessary. It has two doors for easy access to both levels. It took me about 15 minutes to fully assemble the cage, however most of the time was spent attaching the wire portion to the plastic bottom and adding the levels. It was still quite simple to put together and should prove to be easy to clean. The ramps and levels can be wiped down with a damp cloth or baby wipe as needed. I would definitely recommend this cage for pairs of rats (3 or more might be pushing it, especially if they are males).

Our two new rats and my son (me, too–but it’s his) all love this cage.

Even with the shipping, the price was a little lower than we found in pet shops.

It is easy to clean. The food dish is a good size and doesn’t slide around because it fits in a hole. This is a well-designed pet home.

Another reviewer mentioned taking out the wheel. We are still seeing if the rats will use it, but that may be a good idea.

I did quite a bit of research and shopping around for a home for my 2 rats, and I might add that I am a first time rat owner. I read books, looked on the internet, and shopped at pet stores near my home to see them in person. I highly recommend this cage for rats. It offers them plenty of space to run around and they love the levels. It is really neat looking too and encourages me to keep it clean (dailty cleaning) as I love the look and design of it. Originally I was concerned about the spacing of the bars, but my rats are only half grown and the bars are close enough that they cannot escape. As with other cages with the plastic shelves, you might find that they are urinating on the shelves which can be messy if they walk through it. I have found that if I add more bowls, toys, boxes, etc. to the shelves that they will more likely use the bottom part where the litter is. I keep a bottle of Nature’s Miracle nearby for daily wiping up, another product I’d recommend as it’s safe for use around pets.

I was really disappointed with this.

The Good:

– only took about 20 minutes to put together, all the tools you need are included

– good size, small footprint

– very good door placement, all the spots are easy to reach

– easy to remove cage part for cleaning the bottom

– you don’t need them, but the instructions are very clear

– looks like it’d be fun if it worked

– the solid bottom with deep sides is an excellent design for cleaning, you can’t really appreciate this until you’ve tried anything else

The Bad:

– super-cheap plastic, my ramp was broken in the box

– maybe okay for rats, but all the holes were almost too small for my baby ferrets to get through (they’re chubby but not THAT chubby)

– my ferrets might be dumber than most, but they couldn’t figure out how to use the tunnel or spiral stairs, i think mostly because the turns were too sharp and the passage too narrow. they resorted to climbing the cage wall to get to the next level

– with the cheap plastic, the ramps/tubes/spiral are not sturdy, they shook horribly, even with my tinniest ferret, this made them very nervous and reluctant to even try using them (the fastening mechanisms were fine though, i don’t think there was actually any chance of the ramp/tube/spiral actually falling)

– the cage just sits on the wheels, i feel like if there were little kids around they could easily accidentally knock the whole cage over

– my ferrets could open the doors, i had to adjust the latches myself with pliers

– again with the cheap plastic – the cage fastens to the plastic bottom with 2 small plastic fasteners, which are on the verge of breaking after only taking them off twice (you’ll probably want to take them off weekly to clean the cage)

– the deep sides on the bottom make it hard for things that latch to the cage bars to reach the floor – litter box / water bottles / food dish were all too high off the ground

Conclusion:

as it is, it’s unusable (for ferrets). i scrapped mine for pieces to build a new cage myself

This cage is great! Super easy to clean and so far – escape proof. We have a Siberian Hamster (very small) along with a cat and dog. Needless to say if the hamster gets out she will be a late night snack for the other pets.

Wheel is not too noisy and since the cage is “open” there has been absolutely no smell.

I shopped local pet shops and this size of cage was 100.00 or higher. It is a roomy cage and the cost was much cheaper. It was well packed for shipping, but one corner was bent when it arrived. Overall I am satisfied with my purchase and so are my rats!

Item is cost effective and works wonderfully! We added ledges and tunnels and our rats love it! Nice size too! Perfect for 2 (maybe 3 females) rats according to cage calculators. Awesome price (the cheapest I have found anywhere!) for this cage and very easy to clean. I highly recommend this for all looking for a larger cage. Would not work for those with baby rats because of the bar spacing, but older baby rats would be fine in here!

My roommate and I bought this cage for our two norwegian dwarf rabbits. it holds both of them comfortably, even with a small corner litter box and a little house that they can both fit inside of. easy to collapse, too… if you purchase this one, however, you’ll definitely want to purchase a smaller one for travel purposes as well because this one is obviously not ideal for a car or anything

We have had this cage since June 08. It measures 17″H by 17″W by 28″L. We have three huge rex rats in there and they are all happy. We do take our rats outside on an average of 5-6 days per week and clean the cage so I don’t know how happy they’d all be if they didn’t get the excercise. We bought two ferret hammocks and they hang in there nicely. They have a huge 15″ wheel that I bought that is plastic but they don’t use it, it might be the way it is attached to the side that they don’t feel it is secure enough. I saw another cage with another way to attach it that I need to find the original bar that rests on the ground and see about putting it in with zip ties to attach it to the cage bars.

I use cloth bedding and have the cloth go out around the edges of the tray between the top of the tray and the bottom of the cage bars so in cold weather I only have to take the top part of the cage off and carry the sheet outside to the dumpster and flip it to get the poops off and wash it in hot with detergent and vinegar. When we use carefresh the rats do push a lot of it out the sides despite a very deep plastic tray.

They love their nice roomy house-all three fit in there. All the parts of the cage and accessories have held up very well. I have one bar that finally broke on the side where the plastic hook that holds the top and bottom of the cage together goes (the bar part and the tray part). I hook those plastic clips very tight and am not always careful and since I clean it almost daily the wear and tear and break are probably user fault. It hasn’t become a problem yet as it is only one side of the one bar and I just use a different bar now to hook the clip on.

I think ideally sizewise that someone should use it for one or two rats, but ours were all cagemates at petsmart and one was sick in the back when we bought the other two and I came back a few weeks later and he was there all by his lonesome so we decided he needed to be reunited with his brothers and we already had spent the money on this size cage.

The plastic tray is nice as there are no wires for them to hurt their feet on and I bought this on amazon, though, when it was only and qualified for super saver shipping. I don’t think I’d pay the current price for it as there are bigger cages for that. Marchioro makes a deluxe hamster cage that is the same size with lots of accessories that is somewhat cheaper and is sold thru petco’s amazon storefront. If the price goes down again to the 50 range it is worth it as it is well constructed and seems pretty durable. It is also a pleasant color to look at.

I purchased two of these cages for my degus. My adult degus have chewed two of the plastic corner pieces to shredds, (the ones that hold the walls together). They also have chewed up the clips that hold the shelf up. Lastly, I hung wheels on the bars (both cages) and the bars have actually snapped off!!! I purchased these cages from a local pet store and they are going to replace the cages for me. With the new cages, I will keep the wheels on the ground and place the shelf low enough that my little chewers wont be able to reach the top corners of the cage.

Also, these cages do not have a bottom tray so you must take the top off to clean.

I would have given it 5 stars but my gerbils chewed the house up within a week or two and now after a couple of months they no longer have ramps. Currently, they’re working on chewing up the shelves.

So I’m off to buy one that’s entirely wire. Wish I had done that in the first place!

Great idea, but the plastic in the ramps and platforms isn’t going to last much longer with my gerbils…they have chewed completely through one ramp and one platform. This would be a much better product if the ramps and platforms were made of a different (harder) material, or of wood. (The wood to give the gerbils something HEALTHY to chew on) Would be better if it came with an extra set of ramps and platforms until then.
