Review by S. Rezac: 5 Rodent Cages

41jAhlM5RDL. SL75 Rodent CagesThis cage is great! Super easy to clean and so far – escape proof. We have a Siberian Hamster (very small) along with a cat and dog. Needless to say if the hamster gets out she will be a late night snack for the other pets.

Wheel is not too noisy and since the cage is “open” there has been absolutely no smell.

Super Pet My First Home Deluxe Multi-Level Pet Home with Stand Reviews

Review by Julia: 5 Rodent Cages

515TMxfeM5L. SL75 Rodent CagesI did quite a bit of research and shopping around for a home for my 2 rats, and I might add that I am a first time rat owner. I read books, looked on the internet, and shopped at pet stores near my home to see them in person. I highly recommend this cage for rats. It offers them plenty of space to run around and they love the levels. It is really neat looking too and encourages me to keep it clean (dailty cleaning) as I love the look and design of it. Originally I was concerned about the spacing of the bars, but my rats are only half grown and the bars are close enough that they cannot escape. As with other cages with the plastic shelves, you might find that they are urinating on the shelves which can be messy if they walk through it. I have found that if I add more bowls, toys, boxes, etc. to the shelves that they will more likely use the bottom part where the litter is. I keep a bottle of Nature’s Miracle nearby for daily wiping up, another product I’d recommend as it’s safe for use around pets.

Review by John Smith: 1 Rodent Cages

515TMxfeM5L. SL75 Rodent CagesI was really disappointed with this.

The Good:

– only took about 20 minutes to put together, all the tools you need are included

– good size, small footprint

– very good door placement, all the spots are easy to reach

– easy to remove cage part for cleaning the bottom

– you don’t need them, but the instructions are very clear

– looks like it’d be fun if it worked

– the solid bottom with deep sides is an excellent design for cleaning, you can’t really appreciate this until you’ve tried anything else

The Bad:

– super-cheap plastic, my ramp was broken in the box

– maybe okay for rats, but all the holes were almost too small for my baby ferrets to get through (they’re chubby but not THAT chubby)

– my ferrets might be dumber than most, but they couldn’t figure out how to use the tunnel or spiral stairs, i think mostly because the turns were too sharp and the passage too narrow. they resorted to climbing the cage wall to get to the next level

– with the cheap plastic, the ramps/tubes/spiral are not sturdy, they shook horribly, even with my tinniest ferret, this made them very nervous and reluctant to even try using them (the fastening mechanisms were fine though, i don’t think there was actually any chance of the ramp/tube/spiral actually falling)

– the cage just sits on the wheels, i feel like if there were little kids around they could easily accidentally knock the whole cage over

– my ferrets could open the doors, i had to adjust the latches myself with pliers

– again with the cheap plastic – the cage fastens to the plastic bottom with 2 small plastic fasteners, which are on the verge of breaking after only taking them off twice (you’ll probably want to take them off weekly to clean the cage)

– the deep sides on the bottom make it hard for things that latch to the cage bars to reach the floor – litter box / water bottles / food dish were all too high off the ground

Conclusion:

as it is, it’s unusable (for ferrets). i scrapped mine for pieces to build a new cage myself

Havahart 0745 Professional Style One Door Cage Trap for Chipmunks and Rodents, 16 by 6 by 6-3/8-Inch Reviews

Review by Morgen: 5 Rodent Cages

51tOD589I%2BL. SL75 Rodent CagesAll summer long we had a daily stream of chipmunks, mice, and birds flowing into the house courtesy of our cats, which brought them in through the dog flap. The chipmunks often took up residence under the refrigerator and one was under there so long that I started feeding it, too. I tried for weeks to catch it with the mouse-sized Havahart trap, but it never worked. I finally realized that the chipmunk was probably so large for that trap that when the door shut it never shut entirely because the chipmunk’s body was in the way. I went online to see if there was a bigger trap and I found the chipmunk-sized one. I ordered it and within 30 minutes of getting it and setting it up I heard the “Snap” of the trap. Sure enough, I finally had safely trapped the chipmunk. I delivered him to the arboretum across the street, where I hope he lived happily ever after.

Review by Schmedley: 4 Rodent Cages

51tOD589I%2BL. SL75 Rodent CagesThis device works like a charm once you get it tuned. The trigger plate’s rod was a bit too long and it took too much force to trigger the trap. After I filed the rod down a bit, a chipmunk’s sneeze was enough to spring the trap and I’ve been able to catch 2 -3 critters a day. I live in a high chimpmunk zone, so I’m ordering another trap.

One other thing: squirrels tend to like the same bait as chipmunks, so I’ve caught a few of those too. These guys are capable of bending the door lock, so be prepared to have to bend it back (a long screwdriver works) before you can release the squirrel. Also, one chipmunk was smart enought to roll the trap in order to shake the bait loose. A heavy rock or tent stakes solved that problem.

Review by Karen A. Hunter: 3 Rodent Cages

51TXucia4VL. SL75 Rodent CagesWell, we got this cage as a christmas present for our daughter. I decided to put it togeher a week or so before christmas eve, and BOY am I glad I did…those tubes are incredibly hard to snap together, and then even hard to connect through the cage opening. Keep in mind that the tube extensions you can buy at the store are a bit smaller in diameter and as a consequence aren’t interchangeable. So far our little hamster is enjoying his new habitat, and we were able to make the “extra” tubes work. Also, the water feeder had to be replace since the one that is included is really cheesy and leaked. Also, we bought our own “silent” wheel since the plastic one wasn’t that great.

Review by E. Buck: 3 Rodent Cages

51TXucia4VL. SL75 Rodent CagesThis cage was bigger for our hamster but two problems. 1. It came with no directions to put the cage together. 2. The wheel is in a tight spot and it is hard for the hamster to use the wheel. Over all though alot more room for our hamster and she seems to like it.

Review by Michelle: 4 Rodent Cages

51dW5AmkG8L. SL75 Rodent CagesThere were no directions included with the cage, but if you look at all the peices and open them up, its pretty easy.

Our kids (4 and 7yrs) are quite happy with the new cage, and so are the rats. The bar spacing is to far apart for mice or dwarf hamsters, but anything bigger should do quite well.

The bottom tray snaps out for easy cleaning, which is a big plus over the other cage design we have that requires the whole cage be torn apart each time you want to change the bedding.

Check all plastic for chew damage. Some hamsters, mice, rats will chew on plastic and find a way out.

Review by Mara Monroy: 1 Rodent Cages

51dW5AmkG8L. SL75 Rodent CagesI ordered this cage because it said rat cage, I even looked at the dementions to see that it would be big enough for one rat. I got the cage in the mail and it was cracked and a third of the size of its advertisement, not evenclose enough for the size of a rat. I have sence sent them two emails because the return policy said that I needed to do so to get some routing number for the returned package. Both e-maild were sent back with the explanation that the e-mail they gave me no longer existed. DO NOT GET THIS CAGE

Review by S. Corum: 4 Rodent Cages

519zCMkjaxL. SL75 Rodent CagesI would have given it 5 stars but my gerbils chewed the house up within a week or two and now after a couple of months they no longer have ramps. Currently, they’re working on chewing up the shelves.

So I’m off to buy one that’s entirely wire. Wish I had done that in the first place!

Review by Vera R. Boals: 4 Rodent Cages

519zCMkjaxL. SL75 Rodent CagesGreat idea, but the plastic in the ramps and platforms isn’t going to last much longer with my gerbils…they have chewed completely through one ramp and one platform. This would be a much better product if the ramps and platforms were made of a different (harder) material, or of wood. (The wood to give the gerbils something HEALTHY to chew on) Would be better if it came with an extra set of ramps and platforms until then.

Review by Daniel L. O’Brien: 1 Rodent Cages

51ZWDeNOlgL. SL75 Rodent CagesI got this cage from Petsmart and it does look really nice and it is easy to set up BUT it’s very cheap. Apparently they haven’t taken into consideration that rat’s like to chew. The bottom is made out of very cheap plastic. The stairs are actually better quality or maybe just thicker plastic than the bottom. After only about a month in a half of having the cage I woke up to my roommate screaming OMG YOUR RAT IS OUT. Go with a better quality cage or wake up and find your rat having a little mini vacation of her own.

Review by Anti Looter: 5 Rodent Cages

51ZWDeNOlgL. SL75 Rodent CagesThis cage is excellent!! Plenty spacious for two normal or one dumbo size rat! (I wouldn’t stick more than that in) I only put two of the three ramps in to give more space (one to the bottom, one to the top, they have to climb the middle), but even with all three ramps there is ample room! My favorite thing is how easy it is to clean, rat & hand access and to re-arrange to keep them interested! I would recommend this cage to everyone looking for a rat cage! Excellent quality, and I have bought two of them now for my 4 rats!

Caring for pet ferrets

May 4th, 2010

Bailey hates Ferret, with anger

I would just like to correct those who have written about ferrets in this “rodent” section. Many people seem to believe ferrets are rodents due to their tiny bodies and the fact that their faces are similar to the squirrel’s. The fact is, ferrets are from the Mustelidae family, where you will also find several familiar animals including the badger, otter, mink, weasel, wolverine, and the skunk. Just catching everyone up. I am a ferret lover, having two sprites of my own (for those who don’t know, a sprite is a spayed female ferret).

I see that many people have written about ferrets using various tactics and concentrating on several different aspects of ferret care. Getting right down to the nitty gritty of it, caring for a ferret, if it’s done correctly, is like having toddlers who never grow up.

First, there is the obvious. “Homework.” One would think that people would be decent enough to do their homework on a pet to make sure they can handle it. It is unbelievable how many ferrets have to get rescued for mistreatment or get re-sold after years of companionship with a family. These people obviously did not take the feelings of these wonderful little creatures into consideration when they bought them. And yes, they have feelings. Just as your dog or cat get attatched, these guys do as well. In fact, according to “The Ferret Handbook” written by Gerry Bucsis and Barbara Somerville, ferrets are the “third most popular companion pet in North America.” As with the consideration of any new pet, one needs to focus on the future. If the homework had been done properly, one would know that a ferret can live 8 years and maybe more.

Another thing is finding a ferret. Once one has established that they can take care of one and are willing to give it a home worth having, it is time to find your special friend. Now, it is a known fact that ferrets are better off when they have a friend. This does not mean they absolutely have to have another ferret. Two is better than one, in any case, but ferrets also get along with other animals, such as cats and dogs. If you plan to introduce your ferret to other animals, do your homework on that animal. For instance, terriers are advised against being a friend to ferrets. This is due to the fact that they were bred to hunt animals which are the size of ferrets. Homework is so very important. It is actually proven that ferrets are smarter than cats, unless playing out their “weasel war dance”, where they are so happy to the point

A guide to caring for a gerbil – Part 2

January 23rd, 2010

Max

As far as rodents go, gerbils are one of the friendliest around. I had gerbils throughout my childhood, and I loved caring for them. They are low maintenance for the most part, at least compared to dogs and other highly interactive pets. Although caring for gerbils is relatively easy, there are a few points to consider before adopting a gerbil.

First of all, gerbils should always live in groups of at least two. Gerbils are very social and they have been known to live shorter lives and are more likely to be overweight. Although you could spend every waking moment with them, they will still be alone to eat and sleep. These are very social times for a gerbil. They should also be of the same sex because if you get a male and a female you could have an uncontrollable number of gerbils within a short amount of time. A gerbil can have a litter of anywhere from two to eight pups every thirty five to forty five days. If you do the math, it does not take a genius to figure out that you can have a hundred gerbils in no time. If you do decide to breed your gerbils, make sure that you have two different cages set up for separating the gerbils after they are weaned. Be sure that you can properly care for all of the gerbils tht will be born if you are breeding them. You will not get rich breeding gerbils, so do not try to breed gerbils as a way to financial freedom.

Second, gerbils love to dig and rearrange their space so make sure that they have plenty of bedding in their cage and toys that they can chew on and play in. Toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls make great toys. Filling the cage one third full of bedding will give them the necessary amount of bedding to be able to dig and play. The best type of bedding to use in a gerbil cage is aspen or corncob bedding, but using pine or cedar bedding can harm your gerbil’s respiratory system. You can also place some tissue in the cage for them to shred up and make their nest that they will sleep in. Never use any type of newsprint or other shredded paper with ink on it. This could harm your gerbil’s digestive system. They love to decorate, so anything that you can think of for them to use to do so will not only give them something to do, but it is also an amazing thing to watch.

A gerbil needs a water bottle that hangs on the side of the cage high enough so that they cannot chew on the plastic that the water is contained in. If the water bottle is too low, they will chew a hole in it and the water

Humorous stories about gerbils

April 20th, 2009

Remy the rat

Well, our school year was rapidly ending.

The days getting longer and warm.

And all of the barbecues, beach trips and fun

Welcomed summer, with all of its charm.

Seems the Fosters were planning a really cool trip

To the Mountains in their grand RV

They’d be gone for 5 weeks of the summer this year

And they asked to leave Georgie with me.

Now, Georgie was brownish and tannish and white-

With some black on the top of his head.

He had quite a long tail and the cutest round ears

And he had a small roommate named Ted.

Georgie and Ted were both gerbils

They were buddies-about 6 months old.

Bobby Foster said “Georgie is easy as pie”

“But it’s Ted that you don’t want to hold.”

My mom said that she thought it would be ok

That I needed a big kid-type chore.

Then I promised that I’d do my very best

I’d give Georgie all I had and more.

My mom knew how I tried with poor Gilbert.

That a goat was much harder than rats.

I corrected her and said they were rodents-

Rats and gerbils are BOTH food for cats.

When the Fosters got ready to go on their trip,

Bobby said he would brief me on care.

He said just a few tips would make gerbils a breeze

And his parents would pay me what’s fair.

So, the Fosters left Saturday morning

But first gave me that cute gerbil house-

With a blue spinning wheel, and some red, wooden deal

And a ziplock of food for a mouse.

I took Georgie and Ted right on up to my room

Where nobody would bother them much.

I made sure they had water and plenty of food

And a sign that said “Please do not touch.”

Ted seemed pretty nervous, he skittered about-

He ran and he jerked and he stared.

But Georgie was eating a seed in the wheel

And behaved as if he didn’t care.

His wheel, I noticed, was noisy.

And he really liked running a lot.

Oh, well, not a problem. It’s one of his toys

And the only wheel this gerbil’s got.

As I watched, those two gerbils were working.

They chewed on the things in their home.

They chewed on the house and the door and the wheel.

They chewed on the pink plastic dome.

It looked like they ate what they chewed on

But on closer look what I could see

Is that everything big that they chewed with their teeth

Became sawdust right in front of me.

I wondered why they just kept chewing

And chewing and chewing all day.

My mom even said they kept chewing

When I went out with Jason to play.

So, we went to the pet store to ask the man there

About why these two needed to chew.
